Back when I was around 16, 17 or so, I was already attracted to house music and DJ life. So I got myself a mixer and a Soundlab DJ turntable. I set those up next to the regular turntable I already had, and there we go. Due to lack of patience and effort I never took this career to the next level. Fading in and fading out was my thing. But at the time it was OK, together with my mate Martijn I played at a lot of parties from our Waterpolo club and had lots of fun.
The hobby faded away and when I moved out of the house I did not have place fore turntables and it was OK. But as I mentioned before it was still a wish somewhere in the back of my mind. So when we moved to our current home and it was agreed that the attack was mine, I almost immediately ordered a cheap set of turntables. But again, lack of effort, patience and interested, so until recently these turntables were hardly touched.
For the last couple of months the set is used on a regular basis. At the Dutch DJ Academy I practice together with my mentor Richard, and with his tips and advise I do practise at home. The only issue is that playing at home on those cheap Mickey Mouse turntables is a lot different than at the DJ School where they use the industry standard Technics turntables. To make a comparison, it is a bit like driving a Trabant vs a Ferrari. Totally different.
I definately wanted an upgrade but those Technics are a bit too expensive for me, so I had to look for an alternative. After watching lots of reviews I chose the Reloop 7000 mk2 turntables. I picked them up this afternoon, unboxed and installed them. Looks great, and spinning those bas boys feels a lot like the Technics 1210’s at the DJ Academy. So me is happy.
So if you are looking for me, I might be upstairs. Don’t feel the urgent need to build a huge DJ career, just some spinning with friends is OK for me, and off course I do have some small goals.
OK, enough talked, how do I move this into a Top 10? Well, since I will do lots of practising, let’s just dive into my collection and share some great tracks that might be spinned real soon. Enjoy!
1. Mory Kante – Yeke Yeke (Hardfloor Mix)
First time I heard this record was in Nighttown where John Digweed played, the crowd went bazerk. Had to do some hunting but happy to have this one in my collection.
2. Tori Amos – Professional Widow (Armand’s Star Trunk Funkin’ Mix)
Last week I found out that this one is good to mix with nr1.
3. Keiichi Suzuki – Satellite Serenade (The Orb’s Trans Asian Express Mix)
Off course I’m playing an Orb remix. My favorite to be exact. This one builds up beautiful and dreaming. Around 5:30 some bass is added.
4. Monoboy Feat. Delores – The Music In You (Vocal Clubmix)
Let’s add some trance to the list. After hearing Ferry Corsten play this at Dance Valley 2001 I just needed to have this record.
5. Heaven’s Cry – Til Tears Do Us Part (Flash Harry Remix)
Another record I needed to have but actually just scored a few weeks ago. The unofficial for the Tidy Summer Weekender 2004. What a party, and what a record. Goosebumps all over.
6. Tony De Vit – I Don’t Care (Bulletproof Remix)
Let’s stick on the harder side for now. The Bulletproof remix of Tony de Vit‘s ultimate classic.
7. Paul Maddox Feat. Niki Mak – Reach Out (Original Mix)
Love Niki’s vocals.
8. Grace – Not Over Yet (Perfecto Mix)
A timeless Paul Oakenfold classic.
9. Pancake – Don’t Turn Your Back
Let’s slip in some Dutch pride by Olav Basoski & Erick E. Can you believe this one is from 1993?
10. N-Joi – Anthem
Oldest track in the list, this is from 1991.
