Day 266: Redhead Appreciation Day

Today was a busy day. Watching the F1 qualification in the morning. Making a shopping list and buying the groceries. Baking a fresh apple pie, my daily swim. And so on.

In the afternoon we went to my Natasja’s mother. Today it is one year ago that her husband passed away. So in remembrance we had some drinks with family and friends. After that we went out for dinner with the family. It was a nice afternoon and evening. Maybe the occasion was sad, but we enjoyed eachothers company and had a great time.

So now it is late in the evening and still have to prepare a blog. This morning I already had a look at Days Of The Year. The special day we celebrate today is Redhead Appreciation Day. Since I know quit some redheads, both personally and from TV or movies, I will appreciate them through this blog by sharing some facts about redheads.

1. Genetic Rarity

Red hair is a genetic rarity, with only about 1-2% of the world’s population having natural red hair. It is most commonly found in people of Northern European descent.

2. MC1R Generity

The unique red hair color is primarily caused by a variation in the MC1R gene. This gene affects the production of melanin, leading to the distinctive red pigment.

3. Fading with Age

Red hair often fades with age. Many redheads experience a shift from vibrant red to auburn or even blonde hair as they grow older.

4. Sun Sensitivity

Redheads tend to have fair, sensitive skin and are more prone to sunburn. They often require extra protection, such as sunscreen and hats, when exposed to the sun.

5. Freckles

Redheads are more likely to have freckles due to their fair skin. Freckles are clusters of melanin-containing cells that become more visible with sun exposure.

6. Eye Color Diversity

While red hair is commonly associated with green or blue eyes, some redheads have brown eyes. This diversity in eye color adds to the uniqueness of red-haired individuals.

7. Pain Perception

Studies have suggested that redheads may have a higher pain tolerance than individuals with other hair colors. They often require more anesthesia during medical procedures.

8. Artistic Inspiration

Red hair has been a source of inspiration in art, literature, and culture for centuries. Iconic characters like Anne of Green Gables and Pippi Longstocking are known for their fiery red locks.

9. Symbolism

Red hair has been associated with various cultural and historical symbols, including notions of passion, rebellion, and even witchcraft in some periods of history.

10. Redhead Population by Country

Red hair is most common in Scotland, where approximately 13% of the population has red hair. Ireland, Wales, and England also have significant populations of redheads.
