Day 229: Hey Mr DJ

When I was around 16 years old or so, housemusic and DJ culture were rising up. A music and movement I definately appreciated. So I got myself a mixer and a Soundlab DJ turntable and placed them next to the record player I already had. But I never really learned how to play record. It never came any further than fading out one record, and fading in the other one.

When I moved out of my parental house and got my own place, I did not really have space for it, and it was not on top of mind either. Later in life I met lots of new friends due to our collective love for music. I tried a few times at friends to play some records, but in some way I was never convinced I could do it, so I did not put much effort in it.

When we moved in our house 5 years ago I immediately ordered a new pair of decks and a mixer. But again I never found the time or gave it enough priority. Still I do have the desire to learn how to DJ, so I finally took action. I booked myself a DJ course with Dutch DJ Academy. And since I want to learn it the hard way I am doing a course on how to play with vinyl.

Last week I had my first session, this week I did a lot of practising, and today I had my 2nd lesson. It is pretty damn hard, but I am having fun, and I am finally doing something I wanted for a very long time.

So just as last Friday again a list of tracks I would love to add to my vinyl collection and play aloud sometime. And if not these songs are just great practice material. Enjoy!

1. BK – Revolution

5 years ago I bough a collection of hardhouse and hardtrance. Unfortunately this one was not in it. I definately need to get one, especially since this is one of Natasja’s favorites.

2. Fragma – Toca’s Miracle

I love that vocal. I just recently found out that the main man behind Fragma is Ramon Zenker, brother of Frank Zenker a.k.a. DJ Scot Project.

3. Adventures Of Stevie V – Dirty Cash

No clue what to mix this with, but I just know I want to have this.

4. Booming Support – De Rode Schoentjes

A bit of a gimmick when it came out in 1991, but a really powerful track.

5. Joe Smooth – Promised Land

I have some other 12″s from him, but this one is still missing.

6. Bedrock Featuring Carol Leeming – For What You Dream Of (Full On Renaissance Mix)

From the brillant Renaissance: The Mix Collection by Sasha & Digweed.

7. Sunscreem – Perfect Motion (Boys Own Mix)

From the same Sasha & Digweed album.

8. Rui da Silva – Touch me

Yep, another catchy vocal.

9. Steve Hill – Alone

Let’s speed things up.

10. Solarstone – Seven Cities

Off course I need to have some Solarstone on vinyl.
