Yesterday I was having a chat on LinkedIn with my former manager who recently moved to Australia. Today I heard an Australian song on the radio. I’m not gonna tell you which one, since that will give away one of the entries in this list. So it seems the universe is telling me that Australia is begging for some attention. And that seems apprpriate to me. I have worked a lot with people from Australia in the past, and most of them are easy, relaxed people. But most ‘well known’ people I know from Australia I know because of the music, so let’s do a Top10 with music from Australia.
10. Kylie & Jason – Especially for you
It does not get more cheesy than the duet from Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan from 1988.
9. Bee Gees – Stayin’ Alive
You thought the Bee Gees are British? Yes, they are. But in 1958 the whole family emigrated to Australia. Their first musical successes were on Australian soil, therefore they deserve a place in this Australian list.
8. Sia – Move Your Body (Alan Walker Remix)
I’m not that familiar with Sia’s work, but when there are decent trance remixes floating around, I do know.
7. Olivia Newton-John – Physical
This song had been offered to both Rod Stewart and Tina Turner. Since they did decided not to record it, it was then offered to ONJ.
6. Kylie Minogue – Locomotion
Kylie’s 1987 debut single.
5. Crowded House – Don’t Dream It’s Over
Their biggest international hit.
4. Men at Work – Down Under
Originally recorded as a b-side in 1981, but a big hit in 1983.
3. AC/DC – Thunderstruck
Adding a small Dutch link since lead guitar player Angus Young is married to a Dutch woman and lives part time in The Netherlands.
2. INXS – Never Tear Us Apart
I never realised how ‘big’ this band was. Maybe because they already had quite some albums and singles before their big breakthrough with this song.
1. Midnight Oil – Beds Are Burning
Yep, this was the song that triggered this Top10. A song to criticize how the Aboriginals were force from their lands.
